The Northwest Sweet 16 – 10 Year Anniversary Recap

Okay folks here we go <deep breath>. Want to thank everyone who came out and supported the Northwest Sweet 16 10 year anniversary. It was a magical night with unicorns and glitter and all that good stuff. I’m sure yall are dying to know the results, they are below:

The Northwest Sweet 16 Champion:
Ives – Rock Force Crew – Anchorage Alaska
Runner Up:
Phil Wizard – Wizards Crew – Vancouver BC

5v5 B-boy/B-girl Crew Champoins:
Massive Monkees – Seattle WA
Runner Up:
NON – Vancouver BC

5v5 All Styles Champions:
Flooridians – Florida
Runner Up:
Chapter1ne – Oregon

The Sweet 16 was definitely the highlight for the event this year. Brendan Boxcutta throwing some incredibly intricate footwork combos, Philip Kim hitting some amazing blow ups, Dann Vital doing his unique style the whole night, and of course Ives Viray for blowing it up and taking the entire event. Flooridians in the all style comp couldn’t be touched, and had some of the best crew dynamics I’ve ever seen. Massive Monkees once again won the b-boy crew comp with strong solos and routines that overpowered everyone else. The Power King Exhibition did not disappoint either, thanks to Bryan Fishy Nguyen, Alejandro Luna-Juliano, Matt Wong, Khang Nguyen for taking the time to rep.

Lastly I wanted to thank everyone who has helped to put this event on over the last ten years. The Northwest Sweet 16 has always been an event for the Northwest, by the Northwest. It has been great to see the dancers and community members take ownership of the event. I’m sure I’m forgetting a couple people, please don’t take offense as my brain is fried from yesterday. Ricky Chon for co-founding the event and then bouncing like a little punk. Andrew Oledan for being waaaay cooler than Ricky Chon. Sean Fish Boogie for always coming hard with the beats. Joe Ricci for being ring girl and being a true partner in crime. Hosts throughout the years keeping the energy flowing: Niko, Jireh, Joe. Djs shaping the jam with vibes: Fish, AndrĂ©s Digg One, Soul Rane, Kitman. Tracey Wong and Jensine San for helping with the all style tip. Kitty Wu and King Khazm Kogita for holding it down at Zulu and Washington Hall. Everyone who has participated in the Sweet 16 and battled in the crew comp, or just friggin showed up for that matter. And of course everyone who helped with the little things that added up to big things: Kimi, Miles, Sandy, Brendan, Sushen, Andrea Mercedes McCaw, Lee Nagy, Ana-Beth, Marcus Sharpe, Remi M Street.

I’m sorry to say this jam has taken it’s toll on me mentally, physically, and financially. I’ve made the decision to only do it in the future if I have sponsorship, meaning, there could be one next year or this could have very well been the very last one. I’d like to keep it yearly, but I simply don’t know how likely that is. In the case this was indeed the last one, from the bottom of my heart, everyone, thank you thank you thank you….

Ah what an amazing year. Want to thank the whole Outshine team for all the countless hours you’ve put in. Also to all the Sweet 16 contestants and b-boys that came to support. Congrats to Tim the Pitt (Massive Monkees Crew) for finally taking first place, and Stedlove (Mighty Zulu Kingz) for 2nd. Big ups to Dance Broomz/Red Eye Jedi for winning the crew comp, and Hoodz for taking second. Peep the finals below!

The Northwest Sweet 16 – 2016

Well, after much confusion on dates and venues, we have locked it down. This will be our 9th Northwest Sweet 16, and what a year it’s shaping up to be. We have new and old coming back into the bracket to prove their steez, plus out of state competitors to spice things up. New this year, was a prelim in the Southeast, put on by Frantic Chef from Dynamic Rockers. The winner of that competition was Stedlove from Mighty Zulu Kings. He will be the first out of region b-boy to compete in the NW Sweet 16 and we are all very excited to see how our b-boys stack up.

This year will also feature a 3v3 b-boy competition for $600 cash and prizes. Our venue and event information is all available on our event page HERE. Check it out, and be sure to buy presale tickets when they become available because this year will sell out.

The Northwest Sweet 16/Back to the Culture 2015 Recap

So, the weekend is over, and boy what a weekend. We were very disappointed in the turnout for the event. This was probably our lowest turnout in the 8 years we’ve thrown this jam, but we’ve never tried to go head up against the Seattle summer, so shame on us. With that said, it was the best jam we’ve done as far as talent goes. A truly international jam with b-boys from Sweden, Italy, Columbia, Russia, California, and Japan. Awesome to see the cultures combine.

I’m sure you’d like to know the results, they are as follows:

Northwest Sweet 16 2015 Champ: Jbugz, Soul Felons, Vancouver BC
Runner up: Buckshot, Unleashed, Seattle WA

Crew Competition Champions: Massive Monkees, Seattle WA
Crew Competition Runner Up: Breakadelics, Sweden

All Style Crew Champions: Fly Girls, Canada
All Style Crew Runner Up: Hoshito International, Japan/Italy/Sacramento

Highlights for us included Jbugz vs Buckshot in the finals, super sick to see a clash of the new school and old school NW b-boys. Massive Monkess battling Sweden was one of the best battles I’ve seen period. Fly Girls were incredibly prepared. Their routines would have smashed on any crew that we’ve had in the past.

Footage to come soon, we will populate as soon as we can:

The Northwest Sweet 16/Back to the Culture Weekend – June 27 & 28

The Northwest Sweet 16 2015 is almost upon us. June 27th and 28th, please be sure to add that to your schedule. Can’t believe it’s the 8th year. The last couple years have been incredibly awesome. 700+ people, b-boys from all over, cyphers, hype battles, and a vibe that’s full of love. Just the way a dope underground jam should be. This year will feature our first non Northwest b-boy, Neato, who won the Seattle open prelim, as well as returning champions. Please share with your friends!northwest-sweet-16-2015-poster
